The painting is titled “Jodi Hansa“. It is a traditional Pattachitra artwork from Odisha, India, and depicts a pair of swans (Hansa) intertwined to form a single two-headed bird motif. This style of art is often found in Ganjifa card paintings and is an off-shoot of traditional art styles.
This two-headed bird motif is also associated with a mythological figure called Gandaberunda, a powerful, two-headed eagle-like creature from Hindu mythology. The Gandaberunda is considered an avatar of the god Vishnu and symbolizes immense strength, power, and duality. It is notably the state emblem of Karnataka, India.
